From Screen Time to Game Time

Making the active choice the easy choice.

31%

of adults worldwide, about 1.8 billion people, didn't get enough physical activity in 2022, up from 23% in 2000. Among adolescents it's roughly 8 in 10.

The challenge

After work or class, the easiest option is almost always on a screen. Games, streaming and social feeds are instant, free and already in your pocket. Playing sport, by contrast, takes planning: people, a place, a time and usually some money. When that planning feels like work, the screen wins by default. Technology isn't the enemy. The real issue is that the active option carries far more friction than the passive one.

What the research says

  1. 1

    Inactivity is rising, not falling

Insufficient activity among adults rose from 23.4% in 2000 to 31.3% in 2022 and could reach 35% by 2030 if trends continue. WHO has called for more grassroots and community sport to reverse this. [1, 3]

  2. 2

Heavy phone use and sitting go together

A 2025 meta-analysis of 10 studies (5,195 participants) found that young people with higher levels of problematic smartphone use were more likely to be sedentary. Problematic gaming has also been linked to poorer mental-health outcomes. These are associations, not proof that screens cause inactivity. [4, 5]

  3. 3

People move when moving is made easy

Dubai Fitness Challenge 2025 drew a record of more than 3 million participants by making activity free, visible and simple to join. WHO guidance is clear that every bit of movement counts, and replacing sitting time with activity of any intensity brings benefits. [6, 7]

Why it matters

For players

Less time organizing means more time moving, and a phone that leads to a game instead of away from one.

For organizers

When joining is simple, more people say yes, so games are easier to get off the ground.

For venues

Every person who swaps a night on the sofa for a game is a new player on the court.
